Meet the 2012 St Louis Rams draft class!
My Personal Opinions
Too many WRs! Two straight years we draft 2 WRs. I feel there were only 3 WRs worth the Rams time entering the draft and we missed out on Blackmon with the tradeback (which I didnt mind anyway) and then missed out on Floyd on the second tradeback (again, I didnt mind) I was pulling for Fletcher Cox in rd 1 to begin with so taking Brockers does not disappoint me at all and getting all the extra picks was great.
It became real that they were determined to take a WR but once Kendall Wright went all the way at 20, I knew I was not going to be pleased. 5 WRs were taken in rd 2 and I think the Rams got the worst of the 5, probably least NFL ready with Brian Quick. A pick mainly on potential, which always scares me. On a roster that already had Danny Amendola, Danario Alexander, Brandon Gibson, Greg Salas, Austin Pettis, and Dominique Curry and then brought in Steve Smith… WR was a loaded position with average (at best) WR. I think Alexander is a stud, but his injury history cant be relied on. Gibson with the right coaching should be a great player as well but has not shown much yet. Amendola is a slot WR. Smith is a possesion WR but not a go-to guy. Curry is a special teamer. I hated both draft picks last year os Salas and Pettis and didnt see much to change my mind. If things go right, I can’t see Quick breaking into the starting lineup. I like the potential of Givens but the depth is too great. Personally I can see Pettis getting cut and would rather see Curry or Smith go then Gibson but BG doesn’t do too much for special teams. Too many players, not any stars.
Past that, I loved the Janoris Jenkins pick. The kid is a baller and assuming his life is back in order, should be a long term fix in the secondary. I do miss Ron Bartell tho. I dont know what to think of Trumaine Johnson; never heard of the kid until Friday. Everything I have heard is very promising. Whether is plays corner or safety, I think he may help out immediately.
I liked the pick of Pead. In a new run heavy offense, adding another RB was a huge need (not 2 more WRs!). I was really pulling for Martin or Wilson to slip into rd 2 but they were stolen away at the end of rd 1. Pead is a good option and should be able to help protect Jackson. Cant believe they havent drafted a RB earlier in the past few drafts sometime.
Round 5-7 isnt supposed to be filled with players who start on day one, but with Josh Brown on the way out the door, the Rams selected the first kicker of the draft in Greg Zuerlein. I had a little favoritism pulling for Phillip Welch but sounds like Zuerlein should be a decent option. He never played in primetime so I have never seen him kick but the reports are positive. I still thought Brown was one of the leagues better kickers so playing a rookie is a risky move for a team that needs all the points we can get. and I dont know anything about the other 3 kids.
After taking an LSU boy in rd 1, we got kids from Appalachian St., North Alabama, Montana, Missouri Western, Hawaii, and Abilene Christian. Not exactly football powerhouses. A lot of stars don’t come from big programs. For example, the previous mentioned Ron Bartell went to Howard. I think I would still rather have Alabama 2nd teamers then some of the small school starters. Good coaching can make anyone a star so I hope the new group will bring in a good winning attitude. Im excited to see what Jeff Fisher can do.
